January 11th, 2012 Meeting

Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve & Nuke

We’re started off the year with a BANG as we featured two popular and impressive programs at our January meeting.

We were lucky enough to have noted presenter Steve Wright, a 20 year VFX compositing veteran turned master trainer, lift the hood of Nuke to reveal the unique features that have made Nuke so different from all that came before. This presentation was designed for all film and video post production professionals so we got a clear and comprehensive explanation of just how powerful this program is and why Nuke has overtaken the post production world as the de facto leader in visual effects compositing. We could see firsthand why such industry power-hitters as ILM, Weta Digital, DNeg, Framestore, Blue Sky Studios, and practically everyone else have chosen to use Nuke.

Steve showed the power of Nuke by using a simple graphic and turned it into a fully 3D rendered terrain map.  He also went into detail about how to create movement and objects within 3D space.  With Nuke and a few mouse clicks Steve was able to put a 3D character interacting in a 3D space that he created from a 2D photo.

Then we had our break where attendees had time to network, grab some of the Showbiz Store & Cafe’s amazing coffee and take a look through Steve’s Focal Press books.

Following the break, Hollywood-DI’s Managing Director Neil Smith talked to us a little about the amazing work that comes out of Hollywood-DI, a West Hollywood post house which has used Resolve to grade and finish hundreds of projects. He introduced colorist Andrew Balis showed us the ins and outs of Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve.
He demonstrated key features working with Avid’s recently announced Media Composer 6 and showed us how to work with the unlimited color correction nodes which come with Resolve Lite – which is free for us all!

This was a great perfect opportunity to learn more about the world’s highest performance color correction solution.
