A DISCUSSION WITH EDITOR DEBBIE BERMAN
We are thrilled to have the opportunity to spend time with Editor Debbie Berman at the next LAPPG meeting. We’ll explore Debbie’s journey to becoming one of the most exciting new talents and in-demand editors in Hollywood. We will delve into her work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe including the soon to be released Captain Marvel, hear her advice for those looking to move their careers forward, and learn about what it was like to have co-edited the cultural and film phenomenon, Black Panther.
BIO:
Debbie Berman is most well known for her work as the co-editor of BLACK PANTHER, which is the first super hero film ever to be nominated for several Academy Awards (including Best Picture), and winner of three.
Debbie is one of the very few female Editors working on big budget features, and has had a meteoric career rise over the last couple of years. This began with her first foray into Marvel Studios editing SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, 2017’s top grossing super hero film.
She then worked on BLACK PANTHER, a true cultural and film phenomenon which received a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes (Marvel Studio’s highest scoring film), made $1.2 billion worldwide, and is one of the top grossing films of all time. Using her unique life experience of being born and raised in Africa, Debbie was able to help ensure the authenticity of Marvel’s first film set on the continent.
Currently Debbie just finished her third film in a row at Marvel Studios, CAPTAIN MARVEL. This highly anticipated film is the first female led film in their cinematic universe and is being released March 8, 2019.

BIO:
Monica Daniel is an editor based in Los Angeles and is a Picture Editor Member of t
he Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, as well as an Affiliate Member of American Cinema Editors. She has edited all types of content for independent features and television: documentary, reality, interview shows, game shows, show open sizzles, short form packages and scripted narrative. Her work for the E! RED CARPET AWARDS SEASON COVERAGE has been seen by millions in over 100 countries around the world. In her spare time she produces/co-hosts an industry podcast called Going Postal Show (www.goingpostalshow.com).
She is currently working in scripted television as an Assistant Editor. Her shows include SUPERGIRL, PREACHER, COLONY(where she also earned an editing credit) and ALTERED CARBON. She most recently worked on DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW.
COLOR IN NARRATIVE WITH DELUXE’S ANDREA CHLEBAK
Color is an often subtle layer in the process of filmmaking. It adds dimension by enhancing or creating atmosphere, calling attention to certain details, or adding meaning by establishing a palette to a certain character. As a supervising colorist for feature, episodic and documentary projects, Andrea Chlebak will shed light on the process of coming to a final look for a film through color grading; she’ll discuss her use of experimentation, intuition and perception as a toolset to determine how cool, dark or saturated to make an image, and how she collaborates with directors and cinematographers to enhance the narrative through color.
BIO:
Andrea Chlebak has worked in the film industry for 15 years – getting her start as a stills photographer and editor before seizing the opportunity to become a colorist in 2006. Since then, she has set her sights on a rapidly growing collection of feature, series and commercial projects, including Hollywood heavy hitters like ELYSIUM and CHAPPIE, animated features like Kahlil Gibran’s THE PROPHET and award-winning independent features, including MANDY and PROSPECT. Andrea recently joined Deluxe (Encore & EFILM) based in Los Angeles, and is available worldwide.
