March 14th, 2012 Meeting

Triage in the Editing Room: Curing Story, Character, Structure & Pacing Problems & Inaugural Member Showcase

There were lots of new faces as this meeting! We were honored to have John Rosenberg, film editor, post production producer, educator in the graduate division of USC’s School of Cinematic Arts and author of The Healthy Edit (Focal Press, 2011) here to present “Triage in the Editing Room.” He showed us a number of his scene from his own work and discussed why and how de made the editing decisions he did. There was a lively Q & A with many members participating and sharing their opinions on editing.

Then we launched our first ever Member Showcase. It was our first opportunity to see some of the amazing talent that exists in our group. We began the evening with a presentation from long time member Ed Golya, CAS who shared his amazing demo reel which spans and impressive body of work including work on such modern day classics as Top Gun, Home Alone, Halloween and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. And we were even lucky enough to get an inside story about Mr. Cruise!

Then Tom Garber stepped up and shows us his demo reel of his visual effects and animation work. The highlight for many of us was realizing he did a lot of the original MTV logo animations we all grew up with as well as so much of the visual effects and graphics for America’s Most Wanted. Tom answered our questions about how he did some amazing effects with bullets for that show.

And to wrap the evening we had LAPPG’s own Woody Woodhall, CAS share his first music video project, a departure from his day job as an award winning re-recording mixer.  The video for the song, “Shattered Glass” starred Berklee College of Music graduate and up and coming independent recording artist, Neara Russell was shot. Woodhall shot with a Canon 5D and to get many of the masterful looks and beautifully composited shots he utilized using many of the plug-ins we’ve explored here at the LAPPG especially Red Giant’s Magic Bullet.

The showcase was a huge success leaving people asking when the next on will be. So, if you have a short film, video, demo reel or project under 5 minutes that you would be interested in sharing with the group, please email for consideration.
