Senior Applications Editor and Post Production Workflow Consultant Michael Kammes, shared the four places in post today where encoding is not just important, it’s necessary. He discussed where to avoid codec pitfalls pre, during, and after the edit of your project. In addition, he shared the best practices, recommend hardware and software, and shared workflows for many types of users.
Then Michael Rexford, Vice President of Business Affairs at Universal Music Publishing Group, discussed the rights of songs that are used in films, and how to protect yourself without compromising your artistry. He explained how “fair use” is a defense, not a right and that there is in fact allowance in the U.S. Copyright Act for fair use; however, the factors that are weighed in determining whether fair use is available are vague concepts such as (1) “the purpose and character of the use . . .”, (2) “the nature of the copyrighted work”, (3) “the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole”, and (4) “the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work”. He ended his discussion by answering member’s questions.
