July 14th, 2013 Meeting

It was very exciting holding our July 14th meeting for the first time at the Electric Lodge in Venice, CA. Philip Hodgetts along with Gregory Clark were on hand to showcase there latest product, Lumberjack, a real-time logging application for reality tv & documentaries.  After some technical issues having to do with the camera, not the product, Philip was able to walk us through the process of how Lumberjack works and Cirina Cantania offered the group her experiences using the product herself on various projects. Members seemed genuinely interested in the potential uses of this new application and are anxiously awaiting release.

After our break of homemade baked goods, we made the most of being in a theater for the first time and used this opportunity to showcase our member’s work on our third installment of our Member Showcase. The theater made for a great playback experience and it quite awe-inspiring the level of talent represented in our group.

We began with a very clever and creative short piece of Dynamic Type (Kinetic Type) animation from Tony LaTorre using Dynamic Type (Kinetic Type) animation using audio from the movie The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

Next, long-time LAPPG member Andrew Kimery took the stage and showcased the trailer for the documentary he’s been editor on for 6 years called “Looking for Lenny,” about Lenny Bruce’s comic legacy.  http://lookingforlenny.com/

Then Walter Ye took us on a visit to a local woman’s program in downtown LA where he had some very moving and intimate interviews with some of the residents.

Nick Golding showed us the trailer  for the documentary he edited shot by legendary cinematographer Haskell Wexler, together with Andy Davis, Mike Gray and a team of Chicago filmmakers, called Four Days In Chicago. It is a look at the 2012 NATO Summit, and the protests that surrounded it.

Next up was Ricardo Silva who splits his time between working as a broadcast designer and being a program developer of a popular series of plugins called SUGARfx.  Ricardo showcased his high energy demo reel packed with first rate graphics for various tv programs and sporting events that surely get our veins pumping!

Finally we had the chance to see Tal’s fantastic coloring work on the hit ABC show “Dancing with the Stars.” He also shared his amazing workflow with us which allows him to do the majority of his work at home without compromising a single frame.  The group was very impressed as well as envious!

It really was an exciting night and we thank all our friends at Intelligent Assistance and our showcase members for their participation!
